An “ATM card” is a type of payment card that offers a safe, convenient alternative to cash and checks. ATM cards allow you to access a linked bank account anywhere by using an ATM. The basic ATM card allows you to withdraw money directly from your checking or savings account. Access to the account is restricted by a Personal Identification Number (PIN).

Some ATM cards can also function as “debit cards”, allowing the card to be used to make purchases at merchant locations. For example, an ATM card that is also a MasterCard debit card can be used at any merchant that accepts MasterCard cards.
